Louise Butcher was the first woman to run the London marathon topless. Louise ran the world renown race after having a double mastectomy due to breast cancer. After being told by many that she should have reconstructive surgery that she herself didn't want, she has made it her life's work to promote body positivity and encourage people to accept themselves for who they are, rather than changing themselves to make other people feel more comfortable. In the UK it is easy to forget how lucky we are in terms of how open we can be about who we are and how we feel. 

Lala fled her own country when her life was in sever danger, simple because of her sexuality. 

Lala risked her life to travel to the UK but knew if she stayed where she was, not only was her own life was at risk but also the lives of those she loved. She left the people she loved most in order to save them. 

Despite going through all of that and hating having her photograph taken, Lala was brave enough to let me take her portrait and share her story at a public exhibition, so that anyone who felt scared to be who they really are might be encouraged to be themselves and live their truth. 

Mariana is a self-taught artist originally from Kyiv, Ukraine. 

Mariana relocated in Liverpool in  June 2022, due to the ongoing war in her home country. 

Since arriving in the UK Mariana's artwork has been shown in several exhibitions and other public displays. 

Mariana has faced many challenges but her vibrant personality and determination are a true inspiration to everyone she meets.
